As the dust on Spillane settles around players practicing catching, pitching and batting, head coach Chris Cabe said the push this season is to get back into the playoffs. The 2025 season saw the boys advance to the post season for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We have to get eight or nine wins for playoffs," Cabe said.
The season began Friday, April 3 with a loss against the Old Rochester Regional High School Bulldogs, 3-8. With a loss against Blue Hills Regional Tech School Monday, April 6 and a win against Rising Tide Charter Public School Wednesday, April 8 Cabe said his players need to focus on defense as the season progresses.
"Our defense is letting us down tremendously," he said. "We've made a ton of errors in all three games. We just haven't been able to come through with hits when we have people in scoring positions."
The smaller, less experienced team has been an obstacle Cabe said the players are working to overcome. With other varsity teams filled with 18-year-old senior players, Cabe said there's been a power imbalance out on the field.
"We are a very young team," he said. "We only have two seniors this year and have two eighth graders on the team."
Cabe said a big reason as to why the team is small is due to the loss of the little league program. He called the program a 'feeder' into the high school team.
"We don't really have kids that come up into our program who have been playing baseball since they were 7 years old," he said. "Some kids are starting back yo when they get into high school."
Because of the lack of experience, Cabe said he focuses on the 'basic' principles of baseball during practice. Though, that doesn't mean the team doesn't work well together to make a stand against other schools.
Highlighting team captain Keenan Peterson's five-year dedication to the team, Cabe said that he is one of the top pitchers on the team. The 'rock behind the plate' John Varden is another player of many Cabe gave props to.
"We need the younger kids to step up, which they' starting to do a little bit. We just have to get those runs across, get on base, get the confidence and play at this level. I mean, those kids would normally be playing at the JV level," he said.
