Howl a coyote ended up in an osprey nest
When Sharon Lucido looks out the window of her Wareham home, she can catch a glimpse of the nest osprey built on a nearby rock.
What she doesn’t usually see is a coyote snuggled among the branches there.
The rock sits on conserved land serviced by the Wareham Land Trust, Wildlands Trust and Conservation Commission. It is surrounded by water to keep predators away from the nesting birds, but has frozen over.
Lucido said she saw the coyote walking around the ice for about half an hour before it climbed onto the rock.
“There's always wildlife out there, but never an animal like that, a big one,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, it's a coyote.’”
She said it jumped down and wandered the area for a while before climbing back up. Lucido approached it with her camera, but the animal ran away before she could get close.
During the summer, she often sees ospreys in the area. They sometimes take sticks from her yard and fly back to add them to the nest.
“It's pretty cool to watch that,” Lucio said.
