Viking's boys basketball junior hits 1,000 points
After four years playing basketball, Wareham High School junior Amare Rose has achieved a goal he says he's had since the moment he stepped onto the court as a Viking.
Rose reached 1,000 career points Wednesday, Feb. 11 in a game against the St. Mary's Spartans. The team captain has been with the team since eighth grade, reaching a milestone only a few high school players reach.
For his successes, he thanks his teammates.
"They helped me throughout all four years I've been here so I want to congratulate them too, because I never would have had that without any of them," Rose said.
Rose being a good player takes skill coupled with hard work, dedication and trust in his peers. Though he is capable, there's "only so much you can do by yourself."
"I had to learn that throughout these years," he said. "It's been tough. We lost guys last year so I had to get a few more buckets in— share the ball more. But ultimately having the team around me, they help me get there."
Reaching 1,000 points wasn’t a shocker to Rose. He said he's been shooting toward that goal his entire high school career.
"Working out all day every day trying to get where you want to be — 1,000 points crosses your mind every once in a while," he said.
The response to his success has been positive, he said. With tournaments on the horizon, he said it felt good to finally achieve his goal.
"My dad was on my ass all year about getting there," Rose said. "I’ve gotten a lot of congratulations around, a lot of love around the town so it does feel good to finally hit it."
Rose finished the regular season strong with a win against Apponoquet High School Monday, Feb. 16, helping the team win 91-53. The tournament-bound Vikings will know the playoff schedule Saturday, Feb. 21.
The Wareham boys basketball team are ending the season with a 15-5 record.
