We're not in Wareham anymore: CARE puts on The Wizard of Oz
From Kansas to Wareham, in search of a heart, courage, a brain and a home, Dorothy, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow led the audience down the yellow brick road.
The show was put on by the six-week summer session of the Wareham CARE program, an afterschool program offered at the elementary and middle school.
Jane Petracca, a drama instructor in the CARE program said she loves watching the kids come together while they put on the play.
“Seeing them take on the responsibility, working together, supporting each other with being on stage — the whole thing,” she said.
In the cafetorium, the audience took out their phones waiting for the young thespians to begin their journey.
With handmade props, tiny voices came together to share Dorothy’s story.
Gabby Krause, 8, who played Galinda, wore a light blue gown with sparkles and waved a silver magic wand.
Krause said she really liked her costume, because "It was super beautiful."
To guide the quartet, a dancing yellow brick road side-stepped across the stage singing “Keep on down the road.”
Liliana Fahy, 9, who played Dorothy, said the Wizard of Oz wasn't her first play. Having acted in Where The Wild Things Are, Fahy said she is most comfortable on stage when others join her.
However, she said her least favorite part of the show was when she made it to the wizard’s Emerald City.
“He didn’t help me get back to Kansas,” she said.
